What’s Worse than the Leaf Blower?

by Doug on June 2, 2008

Do something now!

How big is your carbon footprint?

Your carbon footprint is the sum total of the amount of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, or CO2, your day-to-day activites (work, recreation, transportation, home, etc.) pump into the atmosphere. Calculating your carbon footprint is a quick and easy first step

I found this image by artist Daniel Britton (LINK) and all I could think was how the leaf blower may be the loudest, most-obnoxious, most useless piece of machinery in the face of the crises of rising energy prices and global climate change. I mean honestly, can you think of any resource-depleting device we need less? Let us know what you think is worse than the leaf blower.

Donate to Microbusiness

The best present you can give is the chance for someone in need to be able to thrive. A donation to Micro Business Development does just that by helping disadvantaged people who want to work find the capital to build their dream business. It is a truly sustainable solution, an example of how to actually strengthen our society through economic profit.

Doug, after listening to my neighbor’s gardener using his leaf-blower for the last 2.6 hours, I couldn’t agree with you more. After mowing the lawn and raking their flower bed they proceed to blow the debris into the street. Every weekend! It’s loud, noxious and completely useless. No Mas No Mas!

I was just thinking the same thing this weekend. I would love to see a cost-benefit analysis: tool cost, fuel cost, maintenance cost, emissions cost vs. actual time & physical exertion saved. What’s wrong with a good old-fashioned rake?
